The mission of the INTEL-MARIC project is to improve the aquaculture sector in the Republic of Croatia, by establishing a unique interdisciplinary research center that, in interaction with stakeholders, would offer technical solutions for highly sophisticated and intelligent farms for target locations with minimal impact on the environment, and, by recognizing problems, develop new project proposals for the long-term sustainability of the center even after the end of the project. In doing so, the emphasis is on the synthesis of knowledge in the field of design and operation of floating structures, their impact on the environment, measurement techniques for monitoring environmental parameters (seawater parameters) and information on other specific features of considered areas (sea depth, wind, waves, sea currents, the potential of clean energy, etc.), knowledge related to the development of program support, etc.
Additionally, INTEL-MARIC continuously monitors the current situation and predicts the further development of the aquaculture sector (with an emphasis on technical and technological aspects), considers the regulatory framework and develops “good practice guidelines”, deals with the impact of aquaculture on the environment and its minimization, develops systems for remote monitoring of seawater parameters, technical solutions (and conceptual projects) for the offshore farms (basic configuration, anchor systems, energy supply…), simultaneously considering their competitiveness with usual configurations, based on appropriate techno-economic indicators.
Project team
The interdisciplinary project team includes researchers in the field of naval architecture, mechanical engineering and agriculture, which enables consideration of a broad spectrum of problems that follow the development of aquaculture globally.
